Ayurveda: The science of aging

Physicians joke that no matter how good we are, our patients will die at some point. It is true that, regardless of human inventiveness and new technologies, we shall all eventually go on the trip into the unknown known as death.

Modern medicine aims to postpone that journey and improve our quality of life while we are still alive. Ayurveda provides humanity with the best chance of reaching both of these objectives.

Purpose Of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that means “life science” or “life knowledge.” It is a comprehensive method for understanding the human being and his interactions with the world. Optimal health is possible when a person lives in harmony with their surroundings.

However, the further out of balance a person is, the less likely they are to attain their maximum life potential in terms of both duration and quality. Ayurveda teaches that each person must learn to live in harmony with the world through their five senses in order to optimize their life potential.

Our senses act as windows into our bodies, minds, and consciousness. We will be healthier if we are exposed to healthy sensory experiences. The body suffers when we consume bad foods. “We are what we eat,” as the saying goes.  We take in the world around us through our senses. The human body and mind can live, but not thrive, on low-quality external experiences.

Aging – stress factors

Ayurveda is a science that not only treats the body but also the mind. In both the East and the West, the mind-body connection is well-established. Stress is widely acknowledged as a factor in the disease.

Stress has been shown to have negative effects on our immune and endocrine systems. Most diseases have a strong link to stress, which influences both the development and prognosis. Ayurveda is a stress-relieving science. Using the senses correctly is one aspect of living a peaceful, low-stress life. Food of poor quality brings physical systems under stress.

Inappropriate odors, images, sounds, and touch can also be stressful, if not more so. While the correct use of the senses is necessary for stress reduction, complete stress reduction also needs mental control. In order to achieve this, Ayurveda uses Yoga techniques to promote mental serenity and stillness. Stress is decreased and time appears to slow down when the mind can focus on the current moment and resist wandering off into past or future crises.

Internal physical processes slow down and relax when the mind slows down and relaxes. Heart rate slows, contractions become stronger and more regular, sympathetic nervous system activity decreases, and stress hormones like adrenaline are released less. Both the mind and the body are healthier when the mind is quiet.

As we get older, we start to notice the cumulative effects of years of stress and a sedentary lifestyle. The consequences appear in the form of cardiovascular disease and the weakening of all parts. Bones become osteoporotic, brain neurons degrade, muscles atrophy, and tissues dry up. The list of disorders associated with advanced age is extensive.

Goal of ayurveda

The process of healing includes regaining optimal function. The experience of optimal function is health. Ayurveda allows people to enhance their healing potential and reclaim their optimal health. Both the cause and symptoms of many age-related disorders can be eliminated by adopting a healthy lifestyle and using natural treatments such as herbs.

The goal of Ayurveda is to eliminate the root of disease and gently support the body’s natural healing processes with natural medicines. Each of us is different, and each illness is different as well.

Two patients who experience heart attacks may or may not have the same reason for their illness, and hence the treatment may differ. The purpose of Ayurveda is to understand both the patient’s and the disease’s specific characteristics. With this knowledge, the Ayurvedic physician may prescribe the finest tailored treatment plan for the patient and then support them as they back to optimal health.

Regardless of the condition, Ayurveda maximizes the patient’s health potential. Patients who receive Ayurvedic treatment might expect to live longer and have a higher quality of life.
