People are increasingly searching on the internet to find out the answer to these questions, “What is my constitution?” “What is my dosha?” They have the same meaning.

In Ayurveda the constitution of a person is defined as the balance of three doshas (biological forces that control the body).

The constitution of a person defines what they are naturally drawn to and what leads them to become out of balance, unwell, and unhealthy. Depending on one’s constitution, individuals may thrive as vegetarians or require meat; they may enjoy spicy dishes or experience scorching indigestion.

How we interact with the environment is determined by our constitution. With this knowledge, wise individual builds an environment that supports who they are as a unique individual. Ayurveda teaches that when we are in sync with our surroundings, we are healthy; when we are out of rhythm, we are sick.

The environment is all we perceive with our five senses. While many people believe that we are what we eat, Ayurveda believes that we are what we eat, smell, touch, hear and see.

There are three fundamental constitutional categories, each of which is a unique combination of the others. A specific diet, as well as different types of smell, colour, sound, and massage therapies, are recommended for each class. Vata, pitta, and Kapha are the three types.

Vata dosha type

The Vata dosha type characters are cool, light, dry, and mobile. They are prone to get cold quickly and frequently wear a sweater or shawl even when others are not.

They are the last to switch on the air conditioner and the first to complain when a room is too cold. They prefer to sleep with extra blankets on their beds.

They usually have a reduced body weight, which is shown in their long, slender bones. With long legs, long necks, and long tapered fingers, many fashion models have a Vata body type.

People with a Vata constitution generally have dry skin, dry eyes, and a dry gut, which leads to constipation and gas. Their talkative behaviour and quick speech patterns reflect their mobile nature.

It can also be noticed in their tendency for being confused and easily overwhelmed. Staying focused is one of their biggest concerns.

Pitta dosha type

People with a pitta nature are typically hot. On a hot summer night, they are likely to be the first to turn on the air conditioner and the first to kick off the blankets.

It is not typical to see them wearing shorts in the cool fall or spring weather while others wear a light sweater since they have a higher level of internal heat. Intestinal heat often develops, resulting in softer, looser stools or diarrhoea.

Pitta persons have a moderate body type, meaning they are neither too heavy nor too thin, and their muscles are well developed. Their skin is generally oily and sensitive to red rashes or acne.

Pitta people have a distinct style of communication that is both clear and direct. Others may be irritated by their sharp and straightforward words and behaviour, but they can be trusted to get the job done.

They usually have passionate and strong personalities. Their problem is that they don’t have enough patience for those who aren’t as focused and driven as they are.

Kapha dosha type

The majority of Kapha people are heavy, chill, slow, and wet. They have a stocky body build due to their hefty nature. This isn’t to argue that people with Kapha personalities are obese. No, they have a denser natural body type than others.

Their bones are thinner and shorter than ours. Their fingers are small and thick, and their neck looks to be near to their shoulders.

The calmer, more laid-back quality of a Kapha personality is what distinguishes them. These people speak carefully and are unlikely to become irritated.

They usually have pleasant and friendly personalities. Their issues focus on being unable to stay motivated or a lack of spontaneity. As a result, once a Kapha person has made up their mind, they are unlikely to modify it.

It’s true that no matter what constitution you have, you face physical and psychological challenges. We’re all guilty of it. I haven’t yet met the perfect, enlightened being who is in perfect health and has perfect peace of mind. 

Ayurveda believes that we are all developing, learning, and evolving, and that understanding our nature can help us develop faster and learn to accept ourselves and others. All spiritual progress is built on the foundations of self-love, non-judgment, compassion, and unconditional love.

It’s interesting to note that each constitutional form has its own set of advantages. People with a Vata nature might be filled with divine zeal and inspiration. In ways pitta and Kapha can only dream, they are often creative and in touch with the delicate world.

People with a pitta nature have mental clarity that helps them to be wonderful leaders and instructors for humanity. Kapha natured people can be a deep pool of love, gentle kindness and nurturing.

While there are three primary energies, each of us is a unique combination, and no two people have ever been made alike. We may choose the right meals to sustain us, as well as the right colours, fragrances, and sounds to surround ourselves with if we know our constitution.

According to Ayurveda, everyone can achieve perfect health and mental tranquillity. Self-awareness is the first step on the way to achieving this.
